Ohlsen Research, LLC

Political Services

Research-On-Retainer

The largest complaint about opposition research firms is that, after they have been paid, they disappear.  They’ll provide follow-up information, but only if asked, and frequently, only if the client is willing to pay an additional fee.

We take a different approach: When you sign a contract with Ohlsen Research, we are with you during every stage of your campaign.  Well ahead of election day, we begin compiling a detailed record of your legislative career: floor and committee votes, public statements and bill sponsorships.  We do our own analysis, rather than cut-and-paste jobs from CRS or Congressional Quarterly.  We focus on third-party validation you can feel confident citing in public communications.  Broken down by issue, our research documents are continually updated with the latest votes and news.

As election day approaches, we verify polling questionnaires, advertisements and direct mail.  We’ll even work with your web designer to create a compelling, fact-based website for your campaign.

Project-Based Political Research

We do time-sensitive self- and opposition research projects.  We will provide a complete dossier on the target, including a professional history, legislative analysis (if necessary), campaign finance, personal finances, legal records research, analysis of all public or private boards sat on, credentials verification, Freedom of Information Act requests and related news clippings.  Our dossiers are well-organized, well-written and thoroughly documented.  If we handle both your self- and opposition research, the opposition dossier will be written with the client’s strengths and vulnerabilities in mind.

In-Depth Issues Analysis

Ohlsen Research can provide in-depth research of a specific issue, focusing on independent analysis and third-party validation.  We will lay bare the issue in a way that is easy for your target audience to understand.

Polling Memos

A poll is only as valuable as the facts in the questionnaire.  Ahead of your first poll, Ohlsen Research will write a memo laying out the the primary strengths and weaknesses of your candidate and his or her opponent.

Media Monitoring

Ohlsen Research had its lonely beginnings at 3:30am every morning doing ‘clips’ seven years ago.  We now takes advantage of the latest technologies to monitor electronic and print media in real-time.  Our media monitoring suite will keep you informed when the news happens.

Staff Training

While we are happy to handle all of our clients’ research and rapid response needs, we understand the desire to have a research team on the ground.  We can staff, train and work with your research team to provide the campaign the same quality research we offer our clients.

Other Services

Corporate Research

We have significant experience researching the records of both private and public companies, including some of the largest in the country.  Ohlsen Research will analyze SEC and ERISA documents, state registration and corporate tax documents,  court filings (including documents made available through discovery) and news databases to provide you with a detailed analysis of your target corporation.

Background Research

Ohlsen Research brings political campaign-style messaging and rapid response to organizational communications.  Whether you need background research on a potential hire, a competitor or just an outsider’s perspective on your organization’s vulnerabilities, we can tailor a project to meet your needs.

Legal Research

Do you need information on an attorney?  A potential litigant?  An expert witness? Ohlsen Research will comb legal and news databases as well as physical courthouse records to compile a complete legal history of your target.

Lobby Tracking

Do you need to know who is lobbying on a specific issue?  Or what issues an organization or lobbyist is lobbying on?  Ohlsen Research can track state and federal lobbyists and provide you the necessary information:

  1. Who is doing the lobbying?

  2. Who is being lobbied?

  3. What issues are being lobbied on?

  4. How much money is being spent?

  5. What favors might those lobbyists be seeking.
